As the Diocese of Lagos celebrated the first anniversary of the consecration and enthronement of Bishop Ifedola Senasu Okupevi, FICAT, PhD, the occasion was marked by a powerful sermon delivered by the Rt. Rev. Dr. James Olusola Odedeji, Bishop of Lagos West. Drawing inspiration from the scriptures, Bishop Odedeji’s sermon highlighted the remarkable achievements of Bishop Okupevi’s first year in office, underscoring the divine hand that has guided his leadership and the diligent spirit that defines his ministry.

Bishop Odedeji anchored his sermon on two key Bible passages, beginning with Psalm 118:22-24: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it.” He emphasized that the numerous accomplishments and progress seen under Bishop Okupevi’s leadership are not merely human efforts but a testament to the marvelous workings of God. He commended the entire diocese for their unwavering support to the Bishop and his wife, noting that this collective effort has been instrumental in realizing the successes of the past year.
Turning to Proverbs 22:29, “Do you see a man diligent in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men,” Bishop Odedeji expounded on the essence of diligence—a defining quality of Bishop Okupevi’s ministry. According to the dictionary, diligence is the careful and persistent effort to accomplish tasks, and Bishop Odedeji described it as doing everything as unto the Lord, embodying the qualities of persistence, thoroughness, and accountability. He lauded Bishop Okupevi for being a diligent leader who remains committed to continuing the legacies of past bishops while forging new paths for the future.
Bishop Odedeji highlighted seven key aspects of diligence:
- Careful attention to detail: Ensuring that every task is executed meticulously.
- Consistent effort and perseverance: Maintaining steady progress despite challenges.
- Thoroughness in completing tasks: Completing all endeavors with excellence.
- Accountability: Taking responsibility for actions and decisions.
- Proactive approach to challenges: Anticipating and addressing issues before they escalate.
- Continuous learning and improvement: Seeking growth in knowledge and practice.
- Persistence: Upholding resilience and determination in the face of obstacles.
He noted that a diligent man is defined by three attributes:
- Persistency: Diligence fosters resilience, allowing one to keep moving forward regardless of the hurdles encountered. Bishop Odedeji urged Bishop Okupevi to continue in this persistent spirit, empowered by diligence to overcome any challenge on his path.
- Discipline: Citing Matthew 16:24, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me,” Bishop Odedeji emphasized that discipline is the backbone of achieving God’s purpose. Discipline involves self-denial and steadfastness, essential qualities for fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted by God.
- Focus: A diligent person directs all attention toward their goals without distraction. Bishop Odedeji encouraged Bishop Okupevi to “focus on your focus and you will become the focus,” urging him to remain steadfast in his vision for the diocese.
In closing, Bishop Odedeji referenced John 15:4-5, “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” He reminded Bishop Okupevi and the entire clergy that their ministry is not accidental but providential, as affirmed in John 15:16, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit.” He encouraged them to maintain their focus on God, the true source of all accomplishments, and to continue to serve with the understanding that they are divinely chosen for this mission.
As the Diocese of Lagos reflects on the past year, it is evident that Bishop Okupevi’s leadership has been characterized by a spirit of diligence, persistence, and unwavering commitment to God’s call. The journey ahead holds great promise, and with continued divine guidance, the future of the diocese shines bright.
