Colossians 3: 18- 4:1 (NKJV)
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 19Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them. 20Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well pleasing to the Lord. 21Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. 22Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality.
4 Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.
‘Charity’, they say, ‘begins at home.’ Many workers in the church have won battles out there but lost woefully at the home front. John. G. Lake is an example. In his Book, God’s Generals, Roberts Liardon writes of John Lake (1870-1935) as ‘a man of healing.’ However, Lake was so absorbed in ministering to others that he was not aware of what was happening to his wife and children (who all died sick and lonely). Lake was later to grieve over his lack of attention to his family in these words “the many miracles wrought at my hands were personally unfulfilling and not worth the loss of my family.”
Paul, mindful of family values, gave the advice in our text today. Christian man, what is your home like? Are you living up to your bidding as the head of the family? (Ephesians 5:23). Christian woman, are you submitting to your own husband, as fitting in the Lord? Parents, are you allowing your children (and house-helps) to be involved in church activities? Are you teaching them in the things of God – how to pray, study the word of God and evangelize? Do you all sit together at the family altar, to worship God? If you are lacking in any, seek God’s help.
Prayer: In the event there is record of disorderliness in your home, ask God for a new beginning. If all is well, thank God.
