Philippians 2: 5-11 (NKJV)

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, …. 8… He humbled Himself and became obedient to … death, even the death of the cross. 9Therefore God also has highly exalted Him … This passage is one of the most challenging in the entire Scripture.  Generally, we are all very protective of our reputation and would do all in our power to protect it when it is threatened.  However, Jesus who was sinless and perfect, and therefore had a reputation to protect, deliberately made Himself of no reputation.  In response to His obedience, humility and sacrifice, God exalted Him and gave Him a name to which everything in heaven, earth and below the earth bows and will continue to bow.

This passage teaches us that the only way up is down.  If we empty and humble ourselves before God, He will exalt us.  Jesus proved it, and so can we if we determine like Him to completely obey God in every area of our lives, without counting the cost.

Prayer: Lord, give us a heart of humility and obedience, just like Jesus! Amen.
