Matthew 5:1-12 (NKJV)

And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying: 3“Blessed are the poor in spirit, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted. 5Blessed are the meek, For they shall inherit the earth. 6Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. 7Blessed are the merciful, For they shall obtain mercy. 8Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God. 9Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. 10Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11“Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 12Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Our passage today has many layers. However, there is one common thread binding all the layers – blessing. Those who sincerely see their need of God (poor in spirit) shall possess the kingdom of heaven; those who genuinely mourn for their sin and or for the sins of others, they shall know the true meaning of divine comfort; those who hunger for righteousness shall be filled (satisfied). The hunger for righteousness is obviously decreasing in our generation. This is the explanation for the lack of contentment in the society. The inner quest for doing things the right way is lacking in many lives today.

Jesus’ teaching in our text is a wake-up call and a yardstick for measuring especially our inward desire for God. Therefore, let’s check whether the ‘coat’ of our Christian living has all the colours mentioned in our text today. Let us ask God for the grace to put on the full colour garment of correct Christian living. Are you lacking in any of the ‘colours’? Ask God to weave in that aspect of His life into you so that as you face the day today, you shall be fully dressed in a coat of many colours.

Prayer:  Lord, weave my life to reflect Your beauty in Jesus’ Name. Amen
